Escaping the bombs and flames of Liverpool, thousands of children are evacuated to the relative safety of the British countryside. Rochel Sharfer, a young Jewish girl, is sent far away from the Torah life she knows, and finds herself alone with her little brother, Daniel, in the sleepy village of Scarisbrick. Unlike the others, Rochel and Daniel are not not taken in by kindly farmers, but rather are placed with Miss Darwen in Gorshuch Hall, where secrets abound and danger stalks. As the war continues, the British efforts are consistently sabotaged by German spies. There is a strong suspicion that the spies are hiding out in Scarisbrick. Rochel is quickly drawn into a web of suspense and intrigue, unsure whom she can trust. She has only her faith and her wits to rely on. The danger mounts and the puzzle deepens - Rochel is in the dark
